Thing 5 – Pursue Your Passions!

November 11th, 2009

I enjoyed reading “Don’t Save The World,” a high school student’s perspective on the college application process in .  It is timely and relevant since my daughter is a senior and I have given up trying to convince her that she needs lots of  extracurricular activities to get into a great university.  Hannah Feldman is a junior who compares her relatively uneventful life to that of other college applicants and their admirable community service activities.  Some have traveled around the globe in the service of humanity while she spent her summer knitting.  Feldman says, “Here’s my point: students should be able to participate in what they are genuinely interested in and forget about whatever looks good on an application.”  My daughter seems to share Feldman’s view and despite the urging of her parents, she has one activity as a senior – French Club.  She loves the French culture and is passionate about traveling back to France after a trip with fellow students last summer.  She says that she is on the Executive Board, and that unlike many seniors, she is continuing to take challenging AP classes and needs extra time to study.  I will be happy to report to her that she is in good company and that she is probably right to pursue what she is passionate about!
